Men's soccer team loses first conference game of season

San Jose State University's men's soccer team's six-game win streak was snapped Sunday with a 1-0 overtime loss to the University of New Mexico.

The Lobos scored the lone goal of the game in the final seconds of overtime as midfielder Ricky Francis headed a corner kick into the goal in the 100th minute.

The loss was the Spartans' first conference loss.

On Saturday, SJSU won its fourth consecutive Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match, beating the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, 2-1.

In the game, Spartan midfielder Tony Chang scored the first goal of the game in the 14th minute on an assist from midfielder Kohta Gaines before the Rebels' tied the game in the 20th minute.

SJSU netted the game-winner in the 49th minute as forward Andiry Budnyy scored on a free kick.

SJSU is slated to return to the field for its final regular season game at 1 p.m. on Sunday against Cal State Sacramento in Sacramento.

The men's soccer team is also slated to enter the MPSF tournament beginning Nov. 14 at the University of New Mexico.

Women's Soccer

SJSU's women's soccer team dropped its final two games of the regular season this weekend, losing to the University of Hawai'i on Friday, 4-0, and Cal State Sacramento, 3-0, on Sunday.

On Friday, the Spartans were outshot 18-12 en route to the team's 10th loss. It was Hawai'i's fifth consecutive conference win, increasing its record to 9-7-2 overall and 5-2 in conference.

Rainbow Wahine midfielder Wanette Miyashiro scored the first and fourth goals of the game, while Natasha Kai notched a goal and a pair of assists in the victory over the Spartans.

The game against Hawai'i was the Spartans final game of the season, and with the loss to Hawai'i and Rice University's victory over the University of Nevada-Reno on Sunday, SJSU was eliminated from the Western Athletic Conference tournament, which is scheduled to begin Thursday in Houston, Tex.

On Sunday, the women's soccer team concluded it's regular season with a loss to the Cal State Sacramento Hornets.

SJSU was shutout for the second straight game as the Hornets scored three second-half goals en route to their third win of the season, increasing its record to 3-13-1.

Hornet forward Lisa Wrightman scored two goals and assisted on the first to lead the Hornet to victory.

With the two weekend losses, the Spartans fell to 3-11-5 overall on the season and 1-4-1 in conference. Last season, SJSU finished 5-12-1.

Cross Country

SJSU's men's and women's cross country teams participated in the WAC championships this weekend.

The men's team placed eighth out of eight teams in the meet with a score of 222. Southern Methodist University took first place with 30 points, while the University of Texas-El Paso (63) and Tulsa University (71) finished second and third, respectively.

Senior Matt Heard was SJSU's top male finisher, placing 34th with a time of 26:48 on the 8,000-meter course.

The women's team placed ninth out of 10 teams with a score of 226.

Rice won the meet with 68 points, while Tulsa (85) and University of Nevada-Reno (87) finished second and third, respectively.

The only team to finish behind the Spartan women's team was Louisiana Tech University, which scored 315 points.

Senior Kim Nebeker finished the 5,000-meter course was the women's top finisher with a time of 19:29, which was good enough for 35th.

Both the men's and women's cross country teams are scheduled to compete in the West Regional meet at Stanford University on Nov. 16.

Men's Golf

Junior golfer Bobby Powers won his first major college tournament Friday by shooting a 69 in the final round of the 49er Classic held at Southern California PGA Champions Course.

Powers shot a 68 and 72, respectively, in the first two rounds of the 54-hole course.

Meanwhile, the Spartan men's golf team finished third in the tournament, shooting 873 as a team, four shots off the leader, University of Arizona.

Junior Isaac Weintraub, who shot a three-round score of 220, finished 15th overall while freshman Alejandro Prieto (233) and freshman Zach Chirst (236) finished 54th and 57th, respectively.

The men's golf team is slated to return to action Feb. 10, 2002 at the UC Irvine Invitational in Coto de Caza, Calif.
