Viewpoint | Fetus's death is murder
Dear Editor,
As the chilling news of Laci's and her unborn child's deaths grieves me to the very marrow of my bones, it also surfaces what appears to be a very big flaw in our societies' thinking toward murder and the unborn.
Several news sources have indicated that prosecutors will, or will attempt to, try Scott Peterson for a double murder; one victim being Laci, the other, her unborn son, who still had the umbilical cord attached when found.
Indeed Scott should be tried for a double murder. There is no doubt in my mind about that. A human has life from the moment of conception until the moment that it dies. And anyone who would cut that life short is surely responsible for murder. But what infuriates me is the double standard that the world, America in particular in this case, lives by. How can millions of mothers, doctors, lawyers and politicians claim a right to abortion, specifically partial birth abortion - yet have the gall to expect that Scott be tried for the murder of his unborn son. Is it the mother's choice that constitutes whether or not it was a murder? Is it only a "murder" when the unborn's life is taken without the mother's consent? Or is murder rightfully defined as the termination of a human life by another no matter what the circumstance?
If the latter were the case, then these same mothers, doctors, lawyers and politicians who would charge Mr. Peterson with a double murder are condemning themselves for the very same crime! And they should likewise be held accountable for that same crime.
Literally millions of 8-month-olds systematically, yet legally, have the life "sucked" from them without a care in the world, save those who have a conscience to know a God-given life from a lump of flesh. Yet, when a beautiful picture of a healthy 27-year-old mother is pasted on the front page of the news, those who would defend the right to murder an 8-month old to their very own death would turn around and NOW call it murder. I am absolutely dumbfounded...
No doubt, they have finally got it right this time: The loss of Laci and her little son was truly a tragic and horrific double murder. But let us also not forget that 45 million little children are murdered worldwide each year.
Is that not a tragedy too?

I think it is a shame you have chosen to use the Laci Peterson tragedy as a platform for your anti-abortion sentiments. The two issues are not the same. (Continued…)
