The statue was originally set to be unveiled in fall 2004, according to an SJSU news release from October 2003.
A few factors have led to a later unveiling, De Alba said, including the presidential staff wanting to explore other options for placement of the statue. The original proposed location was Paseo de San Carlos near the A.S. House, De Alba said.
De Alba said other factors include the possibility of awarding Tommie Smith and John Carlos honorary degrees during commencement and securing Cornel West as a guest speaker for the event.
West is currently a professor at Princeton University and author of several books on race issues.
Other issues covered at Wednesday's meeting included the appointment of three new members to the student fairness committee.
Also discussed was the possibility of giving this year's Steinbeck Award to Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello.
A former Rage Against the Machine member, Morello would be the first African American to receive this award, De Alba said.
The award is given to performers who have shown a spirit of activism like Steinbeck himself, De Alba said.
Past recipients include Bruce Springsteen and Jackson Brown, according to the Steinbeck Center's Web site.
