A female San Jose State University student was sexually assaulted by an unidentified male on Sunday morning at the west stairwell of the Fourth Street garage, according to a University Police Department press release.

A staff member had contacted campus police around 8 a.m. to request "a welfare check" of a woman sleeping on the staircase inside MacQuarrie Hall.

The victim told the responding officers that the suspect had accompanied her as she walked to campus from a local bar at around 2 a.m.

The suspect made "verbal and physical advances" as they stopped at the Fourth Street garage, the victim reported.

She told the officers the suspect forcibly removed her clothes and sexually assaulted her after she turned him down.

The suspect is described as a 22- to 25-year-old Hispanic male, 5 feet 6- to-7 inches tall, between 140 and 150 pounds with a thin build.

He had a shaved head with a short stubble and was wearing "a white tank top T-shirt and blue, baggy jeans," according to the press release.

"We have interviewed several people, but we don't have any suspect as of yet," said Sgt. Robert Noriega, public information offi cer for campus police. "As far as we know, the victim met the suspect at the bar and she did not know him prior (to Sunday morning)."

He said the victim was intoxicated at the time of the assault.

"We are still trying to piece together the events that led up to the assault and we are still looking for witnesses so anyone who has any information is urged to call us," he said.

Noriega said all persons who happened to be near the west stairwell of the Fourth Street garage between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. and think they might have heard or seen anything unusual are encouraged to contact campus police.

Because the incident is under investigation, no further details can be released at this point, Noriega said.

Campus police ask that anyone with information regarding this crime contact the UPD Investigations Division at 924-2222.
