One of the specialty seasonal brews at the Tied House Café and Brewery is the fruit beer. Their springtime selection includes the Raspberry Wheat.
For $3.95, the bright golden, cloudy liquid is served to drinkers in a no frills, plain pint glass.
A slightly sweet, slightly sour smell of raspberry wafts from the glass, mixing with an undertone of tanginess.
When sipping this drink, the first taste that greets your mouth is the sweet raspberry flavoring. The sweetness doesn't last long as it is quickly followed by a bitter kick.
It's a smooth beer, but the aftertaste leaves your mouth with a sour flavor.
Its taste is similar to a traditional wheat beer, with the raspberry just adding a little something extra. Don't be fooled by its "fruit beer" label. It's not your average fruity drink.
Though it may be sweet for a beer, it's definitely not sweet in the syrupy, sugary sense.
It's still definitely a beer, requiring its drinker to have that acquired appreciation of its flavor.
Personally, I'm not a fan of beer. However, the raspberry flavoring makes this one beer drinkable for me, which is no easy task.
Overall, the Raspberry Wheat is a light, crisp beer with a berry kick. The berry is subtle, so don't count on it to drown out the beer taste if you're not a fan.
However, if you like beer, especially wheat beer, and you're looking for something different, this may be the drink for you.
The Tied House is located at 65 N. San Pedro St. in San Jose.
