With love in their hearts and candy in their hands, several members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity will be handing out "candygrams" to the women of San Jose State University today.
Wearing white shirts, red ties and black slacks, Kappa Alpha Psi members will give Hershey's Kisses and a card saying "Happy Valentine's Day," to any woman willing to take them, said Ryan Spencer, president of Kappa Alpha Psi and a senior majoring in public relations.
"We're giving our candygrams to the young ladies that day that do - or do not - have boyfriends," said Chidi Ohaeri, a sophomore majoring in psychology. "It's our way of showing the women of SJSU that we do care and that we take them everyday as a blessing that they are on our campus."
"I think that's cute," said Marie Hulshof, an undeclared sophomore. "It's a nice way to give back. If they have a boyfriend or not, that card and that sweetness could brighten someone's whole day."
Meeting at the Student Union at noon and walking around campus until 2 p.m., members of the fraternity will try to show women how much they appreciate them, Spencer said.
"That's a sweet thing to do," said Cindy Aguilar, a senior majoring in sociology. "It'll make them popular. It's a good way to advertise themselves. I'll feel bad for whoever doesn't get one."
With many people having a negative feeling about the love holiday, the message this fraternity is trying to get across is that this day is about the people you care about, and not just a significant other, Ohaeri said.
"Valentines Day is supposed to be a day to love and show appreciation to people," said Raysean Ford, vice president of the fraternity and a junior majoring in sociology.
"A lot of people think you're supposed to be with a significant other, but that's not the message we believe in. We appreciate people, and this is our gift to you. Enjoy our treat," Ford said.
Not everyone gets something on Valentine's Day and Kappa Alpha Psi is hoping that the ladies of San Jose State will gladly take the card and candy, Ohaeri said.
