The Financial Management Association chapter at San Jose State University took top honors for membership development for the 2005-2006 academic year.
The student organization received the platinum award for recruiting more than 150 new members, said Tiffanie Craig, association president.
"A few years ago, gold - 100 to 150 new members - was the highest level," Craig said. "Our chapter exceeded the gold level by an extraordinary measure, so FMA International added the platinum designation to reward our effort. We have consistently achieved platinum in the years the award has been available."
The SJSU chapter was also honored with the silver award for National Honor Society Membership Development for recruiting nearly 50 new members with a GPA of 3.25 or higher, Craig said.
Matt Rampe, Kyoko Sakata and Victoria Winoto were among 21 students who were named Financial Management Association fellows, an honor given to students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, service or program planning and implementation, Craig said.
"It is a great honor to be recognized this way," Craig said. "Our ability to attract many new members each year is a reflection of the quality of services that our organization provides to students."
Faculty adviser William DeVincenzi, who is also an accounting and finance lecturer at SJSU, said he is pleased with the association's recognition.
"I am very proud of the student leaders for their desire to make this club special and meaningful to their fellow students," DeVincenzi said, who was selected as one of the four Financial Management Association International superior faculty advisors for the academic year.
DeVincenzi said the association only had 12 members when he became the faculty advisor in 2001.
"In the past six years, it has grown to be the largest student organization on campus and has won every major award FMA International gives out each year," DeVincenzi said. "This is an incredible student success story, and I am privileged to be along for the ride."
