On May 4 Connie L. Lurie's donation of $10 million to San Jose State University's College of Education was announced during the Founder's Day celebration.

Lurie said her donation is going to positively affect the faculty, and in turn, positively affect the students. She added that it is important to think outside of the box and think about what education is going to be like 25 years in the future.

She said technology will play a bigger role in the future, and teaching will be very different.

"We need to challenge some of the ways we are doing things," Lurie said.

"I feel very, very fortunate that an upstanding member of the community is willing to invest in our work," said Susan Meyers, dean of the College of Education. "I think that says a lot for her values and her vision. She had entrusted us to take this gift and make all of us proud of the College of Education."

Meyers said the first thing they are planning to do with the gift is to upgrade more classrooms into "smart" classrooms, which are classrooms equipped with new technology.

"This is fabulous. What the donation will do is make it possible to really take our college from a good college to a national recognized, exemplary institution that prepares educators for the future," Meyers said.

At a California State University board of trustees meeting today, SJSU will request to officially change the name of the college to the Connie L. Lurie College of Education.

"I was surprised when they suggested that. I was very surprised and very flattered and honored," Lurie said.

"It's great that she enjoyed her experience here so much that she wants to give back to the school so they can enjoy their experience more," said Sarah Sterling, a student assistant in the department of education.

Lurie is a 1964 graduate of SJSU with bachelor's degrees in elementary education and psychology.

She described her time at SJSU as a positive and happy time.
