Every year the Center for Service Learning recognizes students, faculty and community groups who have demonstrated excellence in service learning with the annual Provost's Awards.
This was the sixth year that the Provost's Awards has honored the community of San Jose State University.
The award selection committee selects the winners based on the integration of academic coursework and community service that enriches learning and meets community needs, according to the center.
The commendations are split into different categories, which include awards for students, faculty, departments, community partners and collaborative projects.
Kristen Wood, a junior majoring in nutrition, received the student honor and felt very grateful about being recognized.
"I feel very humbled and it's quite an honor because there are other students who do a lot of awesome work for the community," Wood said. "In the end, community service is extremely rewarding because there are people out there to support you when you want to make a difference."
Wood got involved with service learning by organizing a community nutrition class in collaboration with San Jose public libraries. The goal of the project was to provide needed nutrition education to teens and their parents in five branch libraries.
"This award is a huge encouragement to keep me going to make a difference in people's lives," Wood said. "I would like to thank the Center for Service Learning for their encouragement and especially to Michael Fallon who was a huge support to me."
Professor Daryl L. Canham won the award for faculty professor by providing community based care through the school of nursing. She developed the East San Jose Nurse Managed Centers Satellite sites and coordinated student/faculty teams to provide vision screening for the San Jose Unified School District kindergartens.
Michael Fallon, a sociology lecturer and program coordinator of the center won for faculty lecturer. Fallon was involved in many of the community service programs organized by students and faculty in the community.
