The graduate studies and research department recently issued its guidelines for the annual CSU Research Award.
According to Pamela Stacks, associate vice president of the department, this award is "supported by funds that are allocated from the Chancellor's Office to each CSU campus."
The department issued a document to each college, library and student affairs unit at SJSU indicating their request for interested faculty members' proposals in support of research, scholarships or creative activities for the 2007-2008 funding cycle.
Stacks said there are three categories under which a faculty member's proposal may fall: mini-grants, summer fellowships and pair grants.
"Depending on the category the faculty chooses," Stacks said in an e-mail, "the selected faculty person may receive any or all of the amount within that category."
Stacks also said faculty often propose research involving student researchers.
According to the document, mini-grants, which have a maximum award of $5,000, "serve as seed money."
The grants in this category are intended for eligible expenditures including only purchases of computer hardware not already supplied by the department, software, and supplies and materials necessary for the research. Travel essential for research may also be included in this category.
Summer fellowships have a maximum award of $10,000.
The document said these fellowships are awarded in whole-month increments and "provided needed to time inaugurate, continue or complete a project, creative activity or research."
These awards are considered salary for the faculty and may only last one to two months.
Pair grants are available for those faculty members interested in both a mini-grant and a one-month summer fellowship. These awards have a maximum of $7,500 available.
Ruth Bermea, assistant to Stacks, said after each faculty member has submitted their proposal to their college, the college then presents them to the university-level research committee, who reviews and determines those selected to receive the awards.
