Drink of the week promotes
the wrong message to students
Letter to the Editor
I loved the juxtaposition on today's front page: "First-time freshmen flood campus" and "Student Culture: Drink of the week." The average age of freshmen on our campus is 18; it wouldn't surprise me if the majority of students on our campus were also below the legal drinking age.
A quick view of the police records (http://www.sjsupd.com/documents/asr2007eb.pdf) indicates 100 specific arrests for liquor law violations on campus and in residence halls in 2006.
Why is the Spartan Daily promoting a "culture" of drinking? I wrote to you on this issue last year, and though my letter was published, the practice of publishing this column continues.
What will it take for the Spartan Daily to promote a healthy student culture at SJSU? There are many wonderful opportunities for students to relax and cool down here on campus and in the surrounding community without breaking the law and becoming intoxicated. A better course would be to promote healthful eating and drinking to students attending SJSU.

Hear hear! Furthermore, I'd like to see the Spartan Daily attempt (however meekly) to rise to the challenge of representing the student body of San Jose State University. (Continued…)
