Kinesiology professor Gong Chen said SJSU started table tennis classes back in 2003 and said it has became very popular.
"I really like to promote table tennis," Chen said. "Physically, it's a lifetime activity whether you are 16 or 60 years old,"
Chen said that he actually only had about a month to put the tournament together so the fact that over 70 people participated was really good.
Also, that there were no qualifications needed to enter the tournament provided few obstacles for any interested students.
For those who may not know the rules of table tennis, there are 11 points in each game and the person to win three-out-of-five-games wins.
The first-place winner for men's singles was Yubo Zhao, a mechanical engineering graduate student.
"I've been playing table tennis since I was in first grade," Zhao said.
To prepare for the tournament, Zhao joined the many other students who gather to play table tennis in the Student Union. .
For women's singles, first place was awarded to Alice Shen.
Ron Liu and Eddy Chang won first in men's doubles.
Alice Shen and Michelle Watson took the top spot in women's doubles
Tran Lam, a senior industrial tech major, and Thanh Le, a senior chemical engineering major, took third in doubles and heard about the tournament from being in Chen's table tennis class.
"We have been playing as a team for three years," Lam and Le said.
Chen said he hopes to make this an annual event where more people can eventually participate year after year.
