Multicultural sorority Sigma Omega Phi hosted a free Halloween carnival for community children Saturday at the Paseo de Cesar Chavez barbecue pits.
"The theme of the annual philanthropy was to believe in opening minds through culture, education and unity," said Vanessa Serrano, a sorority member. "The sorority holds this event on campus to bring children to a university and unity to a community."
Political science alumna Angela de Leon said that nine years ago, she and four other sorority sisters created the first carnival and that she has been coming back ever since.
She said she remembers the first carnival in a small room in the Student Union.
"It was the sorority's way of reaching out to the community and the reason the sorority formed 10 years ago," de Leon said.
"From five founding sisters, the carnival has grown into a group of 10 Greek organizations helping this event, this is its ninth year," said Deftyny Gutierrez, a senior behavioral science major.
Interfraternity Council was the umbrella group of three organizations, and United Sorority and Fraternity Council is the other main support organization for five of the other supporting sororities and fraternities.
Sigma Nu ran the sack race and panda suit. Theta Chi was in charge of the barbecue. Nu Alpha Kappa donated the pumpkin gift baskets.
Games were donated and run by Delta Sigma Phi, Beta Theta Pi, Gamma Zeta Alpha and Sigma Lambda Beta.
"It was a real sacrifice for three of the fraternities that had their own Halloween party last night, but they all still came out bright and early to help out," said junior psychology major Vanessa Serrano.
Kids won tickets and traded them for gifts on a huge gift table, which had kazoos, whistles, cars and monsters.
Serrano directed the grand tour of games, hoop tosses, toss the beanbags and a burlap sack race.
A balloon artist made all kinds of art balloons, including Sponge Bob.
