The Spartan volleyball team lost three sets to one to Utah State 25-20, 27-25, 22-25, 25-23, Thursday at Spartan Complex.

With the Spartans down 24-23 in the fourth set, Aggies outside hitter Liz McArthur, who had a game-high 20 kills, put the game away with a kill.

"We were so close," said Kristal Tsukano, an outside hitter and Libero who had 10 kills." "We were up and down in several parts of the game which could have hurt us.'

During the first set the Spartans had 12 kills, but couldn't hold of the Aggies who had 14 kills in the set.

"The other team had a good offense," said outside hitter Sarah McAtee. "It was hard to read their attacking positions."

The Spartans did have 13 service errors, and McAtee said that was an issue.

McAtee said the Spartans had a solid performance.

"I felt like we had a really good chance of beating them," she said.

Tsukano said the team had been working on their blocking all season long.

"Blocking also improved, which we have been working on, and everyone on the team really brought their A game tonight," she said.

Tsukano said she was really impressed with McAtee's performance.

"She was really dominant," she said.

Kylie Miraldi, who is the middle blocker, led the team with 15 kills.

Coach Oscar Crespo said despite the loss he was really impressed with Miraldi's performance.

"She only had four errors, and she lead us in points again tonight," Crespo said.

Miraldi said that the team put up a fight.

"We can hit, we didn't go down in flames," she said.

Crespo said outside hitter Taylor Japhet was defended well by the Aggies.

"They adjusted to her and it was hard for her to adjust to the opposing team, but we improved on our defense which is good, he said.

Though McAtee said the team has been frustrated with how the season has been going, she said it is still it important that the team stay committed and focused.

"It's always bitter to lose, but great to see the team compete," she said.
